SummerSongs

A Conference and Workshop for Songwriters
Ashokan Field Campus, Shokan, NY
June 28-July 2, 1999

The art of song writing is an important mirror of our culture. Many divergent points of view and experiences can be expressed in a song, which may not find expression in any other way. From Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" to Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" to Mike Rutherford's "The Living Years" to Julie Gold's "From a Distance", songwriters give us valuable insights in to the evolution of our values and our direction as a culture. Left only to the vagaries of the marketplace, there is no guarantee that we will hear the best of what our way of life has to offer in the world of songs and songwriting.

To address this need, I am putting on a songwriter's conference for adults here in the Catskills next summer. The location will be Ashokan Field Campus; a beautiful campground and conference center with cabins, a small lake, a stream, campground, meeting halls, classrooms, and all the makings of a really good time, including delicious meals. Workshops will take place during the day, with plenty of time to relax and play music, swim, sauna or just listen to other people jam. In the evenings will be concerts and song circles, a coffeehouse, and jams that go far into the night.

This will be an exciting and inspiring project to bring together students
from all over the country to study with some of the best songwriters in the
world. If you are interested in teaching, or if you have someone else you would like to recommend to be a part of our conference, either as a teacher, as a participant, or as a staff member, please let me know as soon as possible. I am putting together my teaching staff now. Please call me or write to me via email at the above address so that we can renew old friendships, I can answer questions you may have, or we can just get to know each other better. I know we are all very busy people, but I thought this might be fun!

Hope you hear from you soon!

Best Wishes,
Penny Nichols
