Don't forget about our weekly songwriter chat, held every Monday at 6:00 pm PST. All you need is your browser. We have a great line-up of special guests from the industry.

Kerrville Folk Festival

Kerrville, TX

Kerrville is a little place in the hot wilderness south of Austin. When I lived in Dallas/Ft. Worth I drove down for several of their festivals to see performers including Trout Fishing in America, David Wilcox, Dave Roth, John Gorka, Christine Lavin, Patty Larkin, Poi Dog Pondering, etc. But the best part is when the concerts are over and every one retreats to the campfires, where circle after circle of songwriters take turns playing songs for eachother on their acoustic guitars (or violins or...) or join into big jams until the sun rises. They also have songwriter camps with instruction in songwriting, a New Folk competition, and opportunities for songwriters to sign up and perform at the tree.

Hal Cohen's Open Mic and Showcase Guide

"Songs for Social Change" Monthly Workshops

Los Angeles, CA

"The best way to get involved with Songs for Social Change is to come to a workshop. Workshops are held every month (usually on the last Thursday of the month) from 7-10 p.m. at The Peace Center, 8124 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles, CA (Note: this is NOT our mailing address!). Bring one of your songs to play on tape or live (there's a piano) plus 15 lyric sheets (or just come to listen and discuss!). Songs should deal with social issues (broadly defined). Donation: From zero to $5, depending on ability to pay (this is completely voluntary, and goes to defray costs of mailings and our meeting room). No one turned away for lack of funds!" -- from the SFSC website.

Organizations' Event Calendars

Northern California Songwriters Association (NCSA) Calendar

The bay area, CA

Thanks to Ian Crombie for reminding me to add this link. The NCSA is one of the most active songwriting organizations there is, with a full calendar of events and an annual conference. It hosts regular open mics from Monterrey to north of San Francisco bay. I was able to help a little bit at their office in San Carlos in the setting up of the official NCSA website.

"National Academy of Songwriters" (NAS) Events

Los Angeles, CA

At the NAS '97 conference I had lunch with Rebecca Page and Ralph Torres, the groovy couple that designed this site. Ralph and I talked about spicy food while Rebecca rolled her eyes. Their site is getting better every day! NAS sponsors a lot of events in the L.A. area to support songwriters -- it almost of makes me wish I lived there...

Songwriters Association of Canada" (SAC) Upcoming Events

"Alaska Performing Songwriters Group" (APSG) Events
